I did it...I took both the boys to John's Marching Illini (Marching Band) concert on Sunday afternoon! John said it would be a "family friendly" concert with lots of lights, special effects and funny moments and that it would be great to bring the boys to, and so I did, and we had a great time. :) I shuffled us all into Assembly Hall the nick of time to find our seats and see the show begin. Assembly Hall is a 17,200 seat "in the round" auditorium which is sectioned off for smaller shows like the Band concert we went to on Sunday, but has the potential of bringing in huge audiences for larger gatherings. It was here John first went to "Urbana," a missions conference in high school and has loved reliving memories every time he's back in this building.
As we took our seats, I knew this would be an interesting experience since we sat down, Ryder next to me and Cole on my lap, and when Cole's legs extended, he almost hit the person's head in front of us! I was trying to suck in my pregnant belly the whole time in efforts to give him as much room as possible to stretch but ended up holding his swinging legs most of the time with a few close calls! First, I got Cole's hearing aids out and put them on so he could hear as much of the concert as possible. Then, I quickly pulled out my bags of snacks that I brought to hold the boys attention as they watched the concert below. They munched away quietly, mesmerized by the lights, music, dancing and flag waving!
Up to this point, no one had come to fill the seats next to us leaving 3 seats open to the aisle...perfect for a quick get away if I needed! I had it all planned. :) Just as we were getting comfy, 2 people came to fill those seats next to us, blocking us in. My palms grew a bit sweaty but we were still okay. Every time John came up to conduct, Ryder yelled, "Go, Daddy!" and Cole clapped in response to his brother's enthusiasm. :) I gave Cole his milk that he signed for and before I could reach up to grab it back, he does what he usually does when he's finished with something...he threw it. Much to my embarrassment, it landed on the person's head in front of us! I leaned forward and quietly apologized, "I'm SO sorry!" She didn't even turn around, just motioned her acceptance and we all continued watching the show. By now my palms were really sweaty to the point that I would dry them off on my pants every once in a while so the milk cup wouldn't slip from my grasp too!
By this point I was wondering how long it had been and how much longer it would be...John said it was an hour and a half long concert...I had forgotten to get a program, so I wasn't sure how many more songs were left. Right after Cole threw a goldfish at the man sitting next to the woman who had already gotten our milk cup thrown at her head, I chose a good "in-between-time" and told the people next to us (who were blocking the aisle), that we'd be slipping out! They kindly stood up so we could slip out as gracefully as possible with a 15 month old, 3 year old, diaper bag, pregnant belly and pants that kept slipping down! We went higher where I saw no one was sitting and had a bit more room and no heads to throw food at. Ironically, with more space, my boys tend to be a bit more free-spirited and harder to pin down...I glanced at my watch and realized we had lasted a whole hour! That was pretty good for me! So out the doors we went, to hike around in the beautiful Fall weather until Daddy was done. A great concert to be had by all!!! Needless to say, I was pooped but we had a great time! All the funny moments aside, the concert was great and the boys did watch a good portion of it, spontaneously clapping as they thought something was fun! I love tacking them to as many of John's events as possible, even if we don't last through the entire show!

Thank you for the belly laugh! This entry was hysterical to me. I can picture my own pregnant self experiencing the same thing with my little tiger, and you had two of them. :) Love it Danice! Kirstin
That is a great story! I can just picture the goldfish flying through the air in slow motion! Good for you for braving it!
