On August 28th, my big boy...my oldest son...the one who made me a mother for the first time, turned 4 years old! We feel like he's been 4 for a while now...I even made a mistake at the Easter Egg hunt at church this year and told the lady registering kids that he was 4. He was put in a whole other age bracket for egg hunting! I didn't even notice until my friend whose daughter is the same age as Ryder, asked why he had on a different color wrist band. So you can see, that we've been building up to this birthday for a while! The best birthday wish came true this year...Gramma and Uncle D came to visit for a week right before Ryder's 4th birthday :) These pictures are of our mini birthday party we had with Papa Del's pizza (our favorite!) and Sneaky Chef cupcakes (that means they had healthy stuff in them...but he helped me make them and LOVED every bite! :)What a blessing it was to have Gramma and Uncle D there through it all! More pictures of their visit to come in the next post :)
Ta-Da!Cole is "Mr. Personality" and also wins the award for "Imitator of the Year!" Whatever Ryder does, Cole's version is sure to follow :)
Isn't he precious!!!!Yum, Yum! Here is Ryder's birthday breakfast the morning of his REAL birthday. Sadly, Uncle D and Gramma had left a few days before, but he was excited to open his cards from Grammie and Papa and Gramma and Gramps as soon as he woke up on the day he finally turned 4!Then, when choosing what shirt he'd wear to pre-school that day, he told me it needed to be a birthday kind of shirt with bright colors. He chose his red Nike shirt from his buddy Jacob in CA. We put his treat bags for his class in his bag to bring to pre-school that day. We also brought a snack for them to eat at school. It all had to be off the safe snack list his teacher had given us because of food allergies some of the students have, so he chose Cinnamon Teddy Grahams, baby carrots and apple juice for in class and then chose Starburst and Fruit Roll-Ups for a take home treat! Here are the bags he helped me make :) I added a tag that said, "Here are some special birthday treats, from a 4 year old boy who thinks you're real neat!" He laughed when I read it to him, but I thought they were cute!
When I picked Ry up from pre-school that day, he bounded up to me wearing a birthday visor, holding a certificate and with a star sticker on his shirt announcing his birthday! He wore the visor every moment since he received it until it recently ripped in half...:(
On our way to dinner at the food court in the mall to eat and ride the carousel (his choice), Ry fell asleep. I guess all that birthday at preschool finally caught up with him!
He's also been incredibly blessed with new things to ride for his birthday given to him by our family! Thank you family, for making our time outside so exciting with the presents you sent! When Grammie asked him if there was something he wanted for his birthday over the phone, I witnessed the cutest conversation he had with her, where he asked for...a jet airplane that he could actually fly in (that he was sure Papa could build him). Ha! What a blessing to have more things to ride...the boys FAVORITE thing to do is be outside riding around or playing soccer on the grass. Here they are with some of their AMAZING birthday presents! Cole even got two of his presents on Ryder's birthday too...this made it fun for both! A scooter like Ryder's, but smalller, (which he loves but I can't seem to get him to stay still long enough to take a picture of!) and this amazing truck! Thank you family!!! The boys also love their new soccer goal and stuffed camels sent straight from Israel!...more pictures to come :)
It is in a complete spirit of overwhelmed thankfulness that I post these pictures. My prayer truly is that our kids would learn to become generous and joyful givers too, giving and sharing with others what God has given to them both in material possession but most of all through His spirit. Our family loves being outside together and watching the boys share their new presents with each other and as well as friends down the street makes my heart happy. May we never hold so tightly to our "things" that they can't be shared!

God modeled this best when He gave us His Son...the greatest, most precious gift ever given. There is nothing that helps me gain greater perspective in life, than to think about God sending His Son from the perfect place of heaven, to our world where sin is rampant and people are hurting. His love for us compelled Him not to hold on to what was His, but to send Jesus since He knew through sending what was most precious to Him, He could save His created ones...ones He loves and wants to draw near.

It was through the incredibly selfless act of God that I live today not without trouble, but with...
HOPE in the One who walks on the waves of the storms I face...
PEACE in the One whose love never fails me...
JOY knowing that my God who saved me once, will do it again and again, every day I live falling short of His glory and needing His merciful grace poured out over my life.

GOD is not just an idea man thought up...
Jesus is not just a historical figure...
The Holy Spirit is not superstition...
There is REAL hope, peace and joy to be had for ALL today who ask...

Ask God to show Himself to you today in new and fresh ways...
Read about Jesus in the New Testament of the Bible, and the impact He had on all He was around because He loved others in a way many had never seen before, giving up everything to follow His Father's call...even His own life.
Ask the Holy Spirit to come into your life and transform the way you live, think, breathe and love.
My dear sweet Ryder...
There is nothing I want more for you this birthday, than to know how completely and perfectly you are loved by God. You were created by God, saved by Jesus, and called to a life that is lived for glorifying Him name. God has given you so many qualities He wants to use to reach a hurting world...one that desperately needs to know about God's love for them. I'm so thankful God has given you more courage this year than ever before to try new things. I love the way you say, "Okay, I can do this. I'm just going to be brave!"
This year you've have many opportunites to see how amazing God is...
He healed you through surgery,
He gave your brother new ears,
He gave you a new sister,
He's healed countless "owies,"
He's given you peace and courage to be in the dark without a nightlight,
He's shown you joy in GIVING to others when you gave your "buddies" to Cole and Cora,
He's shown you what it means to TRUST Him when you took off your training wheels,
He's given you a great IMAGINATION when you're playing and pretending you're an astronaut in space or a bird when you make a "nest" on my bed with sleeping bags and pillows before you go to sleep :)
He's given you a mind to learn your ABC's, numbers to 100, write your name and other words you try to spell, read by yourself without any help and so much more...
I'm so proud of you for all you have DONE this year, but more proud of you for the way you are learning what it means to love and be loved by the One who made you. Nothing you DO can ever make Daddy and I love you more or less. I love you sweet boy...I'm thankful that you are not only our son, but my helper and buddy too. You crack me up, help me pick up and are the fastest diaper/wipe fetcher I've ever seen!!! Happy 4th Birthday sweet one. I can't wait to see God more mightily in your life this next year!

Love, Mommy :)

P.S. Looking at these pictures, Ryder just told me, "I can't wait until it's going to be my other birthday...I'm going to turn 5!" I told him to wait a second, and make sure he enjoys being 4 first! "I know, Mom!" he told me, "I love being 4!"
